Happy Inauguration Day!
Quick fact: Today’s inaugural poet, Richard Blanco, is the US’ first Latino and (known) LGBT person to take that role.
Blanco, 44, will also become the youngest ever inaugural poet when he recites a poem of his own composition on 21 January. President Barack Obama, who helped choose Blanco as his inaugural poet, said he was “honoured” that the author would be joining him and his vice president Joe Biden at their second swearing-in ceremony. ‘His contributions to the fields of poetry and the arts have already paved a path forward for future generations of writers,” said Obama. “Richard’s writing will be wonderfully fitting for an inaugural that will celebrate the strength of the American people and our nation’s great diversity.’
